Will El Nino bring wet weather to Silicon Valley this winter?

8/13/2015 (Permalink)

Meteorologists have been closely monitoring the El Nino weather pattern as more and more information is leaning towards the possibility of an extreme winter for our Bay Area. The U.S. Climate Prediction Center recently reported that the warming of sea surface temperatures and the emerging equatorial winds are following the conditions preceding some of the strongest El Ninos in California history. Last time we had such winters was in 1982-1983 and 1997-1998.

The Positive
California's drought and below average rainfall could be helped by this predicted storm. Perhaps our dams and reservoirs could reach their normal levels, we could use water without fearing citation and our plants might even be green again!

The Negative
Things could change and the weather pattern may not take hold. Forecasters are keeping a close watch, although this recent report increased to a 90% chance, up 5% from last month. If things persist we may see El Nino--then again we might not.

If we're not prepared for the extreme weather, we could see widespread flooding and damage. Palo Alto and the rest of Silicon Valley could be hit hard. Power lines, flooding, high winds, and snow, roof leaks, surface water, ground water in your basement or crawlspace...are you ready?

It might be a good idea to revisit your homeowner’s insurance policy; do you have water damage coverage? Does it cover floods? Do you know the details of what your policy covers? A call to your agent will protect you from unforeseen costs and a real disaster, the one to your bank account. Will you need to call SERVPRO of Palo Alto.
