Assessing your restoration needs

Before you search for a restoration company, assess the extent of your water damage or mold problem. Understanding the scope of the issue will help you find a company with the appropriate expertise. Before selecting the best water damage mitigation company in Menlo Park, Evergreen Park, or Stanford Hills, it's imperative to have a clear understanding of the extent of your restoration needs. This initial assessment is the foundation for finding a company that can effectively address your situation. Here are key aspects to consider:

Extent of damage

Begin by evaluating the severity and scope of the water damage or mold infestation. Is it limited to a small area, or has it affected multiple rooms or the entire property? The damage's extent will determine the expertise and resources required for restoration.

Type of damage

Water damage and mold infestations can manifest in various forms. Water damage can result from flooding, leaks, or burst pipes, while mold may be hidden behind walls or visible on surfaces. Identifying the type of damage is crucial for choosing a restoration company with the right expertise.

Duration of exposure

Consider how long the water damage or mold has been present. Prolonged exposure can exacerbate the situation and may require more extensive restoration efforts. A company experienced in handling long-term damage is essential in such cases.

Health and safety concerns

Assess any health and safety risks associated with the damage. Mold, in particular, can pose health hazards, especially for individuals with allergies or respiratory issues. Prioritize the health and safety of occupants when evaluating your restoration needs.

Potential for secondary damage

Water damage can lead to secondary issues, such as structural damage or mold growth if left untreated. Identifying and addressing these potential secondary damages early can save time and money.

Insurance coverage

Review your insurance policy to understand what aspects of the restoration process are covered. This knowledge will help you communicate effectively with your insurer and the restoration company.

Future prevention

Consider how you can prevent future water damage or mold infestations. A reputable restoration company should address the immediate issue and guide preventive measures to safeguard your property.

By thoroughly assessing your restoration needs, you gain clarity on your challenges. This information will enable you to communicate effectively with restoration companies during the selection process, ensuring you choose one with the expertise and resources to address your unique situation. Remember that a restoration company's ability to tailor their services to your needs is crucial in achieving successful restoration and peace of mind.

Experience and expertise

One of the most critical factors to consider when selecting a water damage restoration company in Menlo Park, Evergreen Park, or Stanford Hills is the level of experience and expertise they bring to the table. The restoration industry is highly specialized, and a company's track record and knowledge can significantly impact the quality of its service. Here's why experience and expertise matter:

Navigating complex restoration projects

Experienced restoration companies have likely encountered many restoration scenarios over the years. This wealth of experience equips them to handle complex projects effectively, involving extensive water damage, mold remediation in challenging areas, or a combination of restoration needs.

Efficiency in assessment and planning

Seasoned restoration professionals are skilled at swiftly and accurately assessing the extent of damage and formulating a comprehensive restoration plan. Their efficiency can make a crucial difference in preventing further damage and minimizing downtime for your home or business.

Adherence to industry standards

Established restoration companies are well-versed in industry standards and best practices. They stay updated on the latest techniques, equipment, and regulations, ensuring their restoration work meets the highest quality and safety standards.

Proper equipment and techniques

Experience often translates to having access to state-of-the-art equipment and advanced techniques. This means an experienced restoration company is better equipped to extract water, dry out affected areas efficiently, and remediate mold without causing additional damage.

Navigating insurance processes

Seasoned restoration companies have a deep understanding of insurance processes and can assist you in navigating the often complex claims procedures. This expertise can expedite the restoration process and help you receive the maximum coverage you are entitled to.

Local knowledge and insights

Restoration companies with a history of serving the local community, like SERVPRO of Palo Alto, have valuable insights into the challenges posed by the Menlo Park, Evergreen Park, and Stanford Hills environments. They are familiar with the region's climate and building structures, which can influence restoration strategies.

Customer trust and reputation

A restoration company with a strong history of satisfied customers and positive reviews is a testament to their experience and expertise. It's an indicator that they have consistently delivered high-quality service over time.

When evaluating potential restoration companies, inquire about their years in the industry, the number of completed projects, and their certifications. Don't hesitate to ask for references or read online reviews to gauge their reputation. Ultimately, experience and expertise are pillars of trustworthiness, and choosing a company with a proven track record will give you peace of mind during the restoration process.

Certification and licensing

Ensuring that the water damage restoration company you select in Menlo Park, Evergreen Park, or Stanford Hills is properly certified and licensed is a fundamental step in guaranteeing the quality and legality of their services. Here's why certification and licensing are crucial considerations:

Proof of competence

Certification in the restoration industry proves that the technicians and the company have undergone specialized training and met rigorous standards. It demonstrates their competence in handling various restoration tasks, including water damage restoration, mold remediation, and more.

Compliance with regulations

Licensed restoration companies are required to comply with local and state regulations. This ensures they adhere to safety protocols, environmental guidelines, and ethical business practices, protecting you and the community.

Insurance requirements

Many insurance companies prefer or even require the restoration company working on your property to be certified and licensed. Hiring an unlicensed company may jeopardize your insurance coverage or claims, leaving you financially responsible for the restoration.

Expertise in specialized areas

Certification often extends to specialized areas within restoration, such as mold remediation, structural drying, and fire and smoke restoration. Knowing that a company holds certifications in the specific services you require offers peace of mind.

Quality assurance

Certification bodies typically have stringent quality control standards. Choosing a certified company, such as one affiliated with the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), means you can expect high professionalism and adherence to best practices.

Effective problem solving

Certified technicians have the knowledge and skills to assess complex issues accurately and apply the most effective solutions. This can save time and money by preventing costly mistakes during the restoration process.

Ethical business practices

Certification organizations often require members to adhere to a strict code of ethics. This ensures transparency, honesty, and integrity in all dealings with customers.

Continual education

The restoration industry evolves, with new technologies and techniques emerging regularly. Certified companies and technicians are committed to staying up-to-date through ongoing education and training, ensuring they provide the best possible service.

When researching water damage restoration companies, inquire about their certifications and licensing. If necessary, ask for proof and verify their credentials with the relevant certification bodies or local authorities. A certified and licensed company, such as SERVPRO of Palo Alto, demonstrates professionalism and expertise and assures you that your restoration project is in capable hands.

Rapid response time

The urgency of addressing water damage or mold infestations cannot be overstated. In Menlo Park, Evergreen Park, and Stanford Hills, where the risk of water-related incidents due to climate conditions is present, a rapid response time from a restoration company is paramount. Here's why a swift response matters and what to look for in a company:

Minimizing further damage

The longer water damage or mold is left unaddressed, the more extensive and costly the damage becomes. A restoration company with a rapid response team can swiftly assess the situation, implement containment measures, and begin mitigation efforts to prevent further harm to your property.

Reducing health risks

Mold can quickly increase in damp conditions, posing health risks to occupants. A fast response limits property damage and helps safeguard the health of those residing or working in the affected space.

Preventing structural issues

Water damage can weaken the structural integrity of a building, leading to more severe problems over time. A prompt response can help prevent structural issues from arising, saving you from expensive repairs down the line.

Minimizing downtime

For businesses, minimizing downtime is crucial. Rapid restoration can get your commercial space back in operation sooner, reducing revenue loss and disruptions to your operations.

Insurance compliance

Many insurance policies require policyholders to mitigate damage after an incident promptly. A quick response demonstrates compliance with these requirements and can facilitate smoother claims processes.

When it comes to water damage, time is of the essence. The longer water damage is left untreated, the more it can affect the property value of homes and businesses throughout Palo Alto.

Standing water can cause a variety of problems, including the growth of mold and mildew, structural damage, and a decrease in property value. Mold and mildew can cause health issues, while structural damage can lead to costly repairs. Unaddressed water damage can also decrease the value of a home or business, making it difficult to sell or lease.

How to Mitigate Water Damage

Advanced technology and equipment used for effective water removal

Devices such as moisture detectors, hygrometers, and various meters can measure the degree of moisture saturation. Infrared cameras are useful in detecting concealed water present behind walls and ceilings. To ensure that high-level water is steadily removed, submersible and gas-run pumps are employed. Truck-mounted and portable extraction units then carry out effective water extraction operations.

Trained experts will promptly commence extracting the water. The extent of the water damage will determine whether the team utilizes robust submersible pumps, along with heavy-duty wet/dry vacuums. The objective is to eliminate most of the water to hasten the drying duration and deter any subsequent harm caused by mold and bacterial proliferation.

SERVPRO of Palo Alto Provides Expert Water Removal Techniques After Water Damage in Greenmeadow, Palo Alto, CA

5/23/2023 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: Factors such as the type and extent of water damage, the location and accessibility of the affected area, the cost of the technique, the time and manpower needed, and the availability of the necessary equipment should all be taken into consideration when choosing the most appropriate water removal technique. SERVPRO of Palo Alto is a professional water removal company that has the resources, expertise, and experience to handle any water removal job.

Residents of Greenmeadow, Palo Alto, CA are all too familiar with the effects of water damage. Whether due to flooding, leaking pipes, or other causes, water damage can cause serious and costly damage to a property if not promptly and properly addressed. The key to mitigating the effects of water damage is to remove the water as soon as possible. Different techniques exist for the removal of water, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. SERVPRO of Palo Alto explains the effectiveness of traditional and modern water removal techniques, as well as the factors to consider when choosing a technique.

Traditional Water Removal Techniques

The most common traditional water removal techniques are mopping and towel drying, wet vacuuming, and bucket removal. Mopping and towel drying are the most basic and cost-effective methods of water removal. However, they are also the slowest and least effective, as they do not completely remove all of the water from the affected area. Wet vacuuming is more efficient than mopping and towel drying, but is still limited in its effectiveness. Bucket removal is slightly more effective than mopping and towel drying, but is quite labor-intensive and time-consuming.

Modern Water Removal Techniques

Modern water removal techniques include dehumidification, air drying, the use of air movers, and flood pumping. Dehumidification is the most efficient and effective technique, as it removes moisture from the air and prevents the growth of mold and mildew. Air drying is also effective, but is less efficient than dehumidification. Air movers and flood pumps are used to remove large amounts of water quickly but can be costly and time-consuming.

Comparison of Water Removal Techniques

When comparing different water removal techniques, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, speed, and safety should be taken into consideration. Mopping and towel drying are the least efficient and cost-effective, and are also the slowest and least safe. Wet vacuuming is slightly more efficient, cost-effective, and faster, but is still not as effective as dehumidification or air drying. Dehumidification and air drying are the most efficient and cost-effective, but they require the use of specialized equipment and can be time-consuming. Flood pumping is the fastest and most effective technique, but it is also the most expensive and requires the use of specialized equipment.

Factors to Consider when Choosing Water Removal Techniques

When choosing a water removal technique, it is important to consider the type and extent of water damage, the location and accessibility of the affected area, the cost of the technique, the time and manpower needed, and the availability of the necessary equipment. Mopping and towel drying are best suited for small areas, while wet vacuuming is more effective for larger areas. Dehumidification and air drying are the most efficient and cost-effective techniques, but require specialized equipment and can be time-consuming. Flood pumping is the fastest and most effective technique, but is also the most expensive and requires specialized equipment.

What homeowners need to know about smoke and fire damage and insurance

1/2/2023 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO® of Palo Alto provides homeowners with tips for dealing with insurance coverage after a fire and smoke cause property damage in the home.

SERVPRO of Palo Alto provides the fire and water damage restoration services needed to recover from a fire damage disaster involving smoke, soot, and ash. The experience of going through a house fire is traumatic, whether the incident is limited to a malfunctioning appliance with more smoke than fire or a large-scale blaze that engulfs the home in smoke and flames.

Regarding insurance coverage for the event, most standard property insurance policies cover fire and water damage. A smoke damage claim can be complicated, and a smoke damage payout can present some stiff challenges. Listed below are three important tips involving smoke damage insurance claims.

#1. Provide detailed documentation of the fire, smoke, and water damage, including images and video

A standard homeowners insurance policy will undoubtedly cover losses caused by the fire. Once the flames are extinguished, and the smoke is cleared, the first order of business is to extensively and accurately document damages and losses. The smoke damage insurance claim needs to include the following information about the property.

  • What was the date of the fire and smoke damage event?
  • Describe the type of loss or damage. (fire, smoke, water, chemical damage from fire extinguishers, damage from the fire department seeking to access and extinguish flames, an explosion from a gas leak or propane tank, etc.)
  • Detail the extent of damage, such as rooms involved, garage, attic, attached buildings, or sheds.
  • Were there any personal injuries? If so, describe the type and severity of personal injuries and medical expenses if emergency services were required.
  • Who else was directly impacted by the property damage disaster? (guests, friends, neighbors assisting evacuation, or “good Samaritan” strangers)
  • In detail, describe the condition of the home, going room by room.
  • As much as possible, make an exhaustive list of contents damaged by the fire, smoke, and water from the event.
  • Delineate which items are destroyed and will need replacement and which objects appear salvageable. Avoid throwing anything away. The insurance company has the final say regarding what is damaged beyond repair and what can be restored. Take pictures of everything. This task may require multiple cell phones or cloud storage capabilities if internet access is available.
  • Secure copies of the police report and the fire department reports.

Other action steps are a vital part of the process. The homeowner is likely required to contact the insurance company as soon as possible, usually within a specified amount of time after a loss event. The insurance company will also require the policyholder to handle related matters. The exchange of emails and documents will be significant. Make personal copies of all documents. Archive emails. Create a digital folder on the cloud to ensure safe yet efficient access. For quick non-digital access, store important documents in a folder or binder.

#2. Know the extent and limits of the policy in force

The standard homeowner’s policy covers flame, smoke, ash, or soot damage. A home destroyed by a fire would be covered up to the policy limit for a new home. Contents damaged by the byproducts of the fire will be cleaned and restored. Items beyond repair will be replaced. Smoke and soot can infiltrate deep into electronics, furniture, fabric, and tiny crevices. Evidence of the contamination may not be visible, but the damage is real. Even items that show little or no signs of damage should be professionally cleaned or removed from the home and discarded.

#3. Hire only trained, certified, and experienced professionals for the cleanup and restoration

Once the damages have been documented, and the insurance company has been notified, cleanup and restoration can begin. Most policies cover cleanup and restoration after a fire, smoke, and water damage disaster. The headaches and health hazards of a DIY fire, smoke, soot, and ash restoration project are not worth the risks.

The experts at SERVPRO of Palo Alto are IICRC-certified with years of experience in water and fire damage cleanup and restoration. Powerful equipment, cutting-edge technology, advanced cleaning techniques, and EPA-approved disinfecting, sanitizing, and deodorizing products enable technicians to clean up and restore the damage quickly. Team members follow stringent safety procedures and use PPG to ensure safety. The quick cleanup reduces the likelihood of advanced secondary damage such as mold and wood rot.

Five Ways Saltwater Complicates a Water Damage Disaster

11/24/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Palo Alto highlights the effects of saltwater in a water damage situation.

As a city located on the California coast, Sunnyvale has seen its share of flooding, and the local community is no stranger to dealing with water damage. When a coastal home or business floods, the presence of saltwater has distinctive effects on the nature of the property damage situation. SERVPRO® of Palo Alto is highlighting several areas where saltwater exacerbates property damage.

King tides and coastal water damage

King tides, a yearly occurrence of unusually high tides, can be a cause of saltwater flooding at properties in the Sunnyvale area. This year, the California King Tides Project forecasts that king tides will occur between December 23 and 24 in 2022 and between January 21 and 22 in 2023.

An article from NPR explains how the observation of king tides can help anticipate damage from storms and heavy rainfall. “They are indicators of how and where rising water levels can extend further inland, especially when they occur under storm conditions. And, in addition to increased flooding, encroaching waves erode beaches and cliffs and raise coastal groundwater levels.”

The article goes on to state: “In August 2020, the California Legislative Analyst’s Office reported: ‘Scientific estimates suggest the magnitude of sea-level rise (SLR) in California could be at least half of one foot in 2030 and as much as seven feet by 2100. Moreover, storm surges, exceptionally high “king tides,” or El Niño events could produce notably higher water levels than SLR alone.’ According to the same study, up to $10 billion worth of existing property in California is likely to be underwater by 2050. An additional $6 billion to $10 billion will be at risk during high tides.”

What happens when saltwater is a factor in a water damage disaster?

  1. The floodwaters become more conductive.

In any type of water damage event, homeowners and business owners should always be careful to avoid coming in contact with water that has potentially been electrified. However, the presence of salt in the floodwaters allows the water to more easily carry an electrical current. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains this phenomenon: “Because dissolved salts and other inorganic chemicals conduct electrical current, conductivity increases as salinity increases.”

  1. The drying time increases, causing an elevated mold risk.

Because of interactions between salt and water at the molecular level, saltwater evaporates at a slower rate than fresh water. As a result, saltwater stays in the damaged property for a longer period, continuing to cause damage and increasing the scope of the water-damaged area. Once the water finally evaporates, salt will still remain, leaving white, grainy layers on the inside of the home or business. Delays in moisture evaporation also allow for mold to take hold and a mold infestation to develop.

  1. Construction materials begin to dissolve.

Saltwater eats away at all kinds of building materials, including wood, drywall, gypsum board, mortar, plaster, concrete, metal, cinder blocks, and bricks. In areas that frequently experience storms and tidal flooding, recurring exposure to saltwater can cause severe structural issues.

  1. Metal corrodes more rapidly.

Highly salinated water creates a corrosive environment that affects metal supports and piping in a home or business. Copper piping is especially vulnerable to damage from saltwater, but cast iron and galvanized steel plumbing are also at risk. If saltwater weakens the integrity of a pipe, the pipe may crack or burst in the future, leading to another water damage disaster.

  1. The structure’s foundation starts to erode.

Saltwater upsets soil chemistry and stresses surrounding plant life. This increased soil salinity causes shifting, which destabilizes the foundation of a building and can cause structural problems.

When saltwater floods a Sunnyvale, CA, home or business, the property owner needs to enlist the services of a local full-service restoration company that has experience dealing with the property damage issues that affect homes and businesses in Sunnyvale and surrounding areas. Strategies to Avoid a Mold Infestation Requiring Mold Remediation Services

9/6/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Palo Alto shares strategies to help prevent mold damage in Atherton, CA, homes.

SERVPRO of Palo Alto is dedicated to helping homeowners and businesses overcome property damage disasters, such as a mold infestation. To prevent mold growth in Atherton, CA, homes, the team at SERVPRO of Palo Alto is providing a mold prevention checklist.

Mold thrives in dark, warm, moist places with plenty of organic matter such as wood, paper, and natural fibers. In a day or two, mold can appear on walls, furniture, cabinets, clothing, appliances, and upholstery. An infestation can prove difficult to remediate without professional help, sophisticated equipment, and products to remove and kill the mold. Mold can be found in plain sight, but it can also hide between walls, on the backside of furniture, in the attic, and in seldom used closets. Mold growth can cause structural damage if its progress is not halted. The mold prevention checklist provided below can help homeowners get a handle on a mold problem in the home.

Home Checklist for Mold Growth

Moisture promotes mold growth. Excessive amounts of moisture accelerate mold growth, so mitigating excessive humidity in the home can help prevent mold growth. To detect moisture in the home, use a moisture meter. If humidity levels are at or above 50 percent, steps need to be taken to mitigate the problem. A musty smell in the home may indicate mold growth, and the odor will be most obvious after leaving the house and returning a couple of hours later.

A key indicator of excessive moisture is the presence of mold in closets, on windowsills, and behind furniture. Look and feel for condensation on toilet tanks, toilet seats, exposed pipes, and window panes.

Water stains are another red flag for excessive moisture. Check for bronze and brown stains on ceilings, windowsills, and walls. Feel the underside of plastic storage containers kept in the basement. If moisture levels are low, the containers will be dry. Damp bottoms on boxes stored in the basement indicate excessive moisture. Since plastic containers and corrugated boxes are seldom moved, any moisture on the bottoms of the items should alert the homeowner to moisture issues.

Tips for Controlling Indoor Moisture Levels

Changes in lifestyle practices can help reduce moisture levels in the home. Where possible, hang wet laundry outdoors to dry in the Palo Alto sun. Do not bring wet shoes, clothing, and umbrellas into the house. A clean home inhibits mold growth. Crumbs, dander, dust, and dirty dishes provide much-needed food for mold. Standing water in glasses, plates, and bowls increase moisture levels in the home. Cover aquariums to prevent moisture loss. Limit the number of houseplants, or select plants that require very little water. Interior xeriscaping allows a homeowner to have fresh greenery without moisture intrusion. Keep pet areas clean and dry.

How to Reduce Moisture from Appliances

An improperly vented clothes dryer can pump large amounts of moisture into a home and the crawl space where mold can proliferate. Inspect the dryer connection several times yearly to ensure the moist air is evacuating the house. Empty and clean the refrigerator drip pan. Check for leaks and cracks when cleaning the unit. Pay attention to water levels in room dehumidifiers. When not in use, keep the reservoir empty and dry.

Proper HVAC maintenance of coils, lines, and filters helps the system run smoothly and efficiently. Inefficient or malfunctioning HVAC systems can be a major source of moisture in the home.

Humidifiers increase moisture levels in a room or other living space. Use this appliance sparingly as it elevates the humidity in the home. During the winter, high-temperature levels in the house increase humidity levels in the home. Lower the thermostat and add a layer of clothing. The cooler, drier air will reduce the likelihood of a mold outbreak.

Other Strategies to Reduce Moisture Levels in the Home

As soon as a plumbing leak is discovered, have it immediately repaired. Clean up any water damage. If needed, call a professional damage restoration company to ensure affected areas are dry and any mold issues have been eliminated.

Keep gutters and downspouts clean and flowing freely. Ensure the grade around the foundation is sloped to avoid pooling around the foundation. Keep plants and shrubs trimmed away from the foundation. Create a barrier between mulch and the foundation. Make sure that sprinklers do not wet the side of the home. Install a moisture barrier to reduce moisture in the crawl space.

What to Do If Mold Is Discovered

The team of IICRC-certified professionals at SERVPRO of Palo Alto has the training, equipment, advanced cleaning techniques, and EPA-approved products to remediate mold issues in the home. Crews are available 24/7, 365 days a year, including holidays.

How to Stay Safe and Avoid Property Damage When Conditions Are Right for a Landslide

8/9/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Palo Alto shares strategies to stay safe before, during, and after a landslide or mudflow.

When a fire damage, smoke damage, water damage, storm damage, or flood damage disaster strikes, SERVPRO of Palo Alto provides Palo Alto and the surrounding Bay area with property damage cleanup and restoration services. Natural disasters such as landslides and mudflows can cause financial, physical, and emotional pain. SERVPRO of Palo Alto shares strategies to help homeowners and business owners stay safe when the risk of landslides and mudflows is high.

Understanding Landslides: Common Causes

A landslide refers to land sliding down a hill. A landslide occurs when large amounts of earth, rocks, and debris such as trees, plants, and structures move down a slope. Not all landslides are the same. One type of landslide is a debris flow. Also known as a mudslide, a debris flow is a common type of landslide. What sets the debris flow apart is its high velocity and the tendency to flow in channels.

Natural and Man-Made Causes of Landslides and Debris Flows

Earth and debris are usually stable. As the slope of the terrain increases, naturally stable ground becomes vulnerable and fragile. Any disturbance of the ground can cause a landslide if the slope is steep enough. Seismic tremors, full-scale earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions can tip the scales on heavily sloped land, triggering massive landslides.

A period of heavy rain followed by a season of drought creates conditions that are susceptible to mudslides when the rains return. Dry ground rapidly soaks up the moisture like a sponge. If the rain continues, mudslides are sure to follow. Mudslides typically start on steep slopes. Landslides are a risk hazard where wildfires and human encroachment have deforested a land area.

Health Risks from Landslides and Debris Flows

In areas where the likelihood of a landslide is high, so are the risks of property damage, physical harm, and even death. Landslides and mudflows account for 25 to 50 fatalities annually. Health hazards include:

  • Broken utility lines, such as electrical, gas, or sewage, that can cause injury, disease, or illness
  • Damage to the transportation infrastructure, which can endanger motorists traveling on the treacherous roads and prevent first responders from giving aid to injured persons
  • Trauma and broken bones from impact by swiftly moving water and debris

High-Risk Areas

An awareness of local areas that are prone to landslides and mudflows is essential. When conditions arise that would elevate the likelihood of a landslide, residents and businesses should be on the alert for danger. Preparation, awareness, and a swift response can prevent injury and property damage and save lives. Land areas and terrains most susceptible to a natural disaster such as a landslide or mudflow include:

  • Acreage where vegetation is sparse or absent (from fire or human modification)
  • Steep slopes
  • Sites that have already experienced a landslide
  • River and stream beds
  • Terrain altered to accommodate new construction and infrastructure
  • Areas modified to accommodate drainage and runoff

Anyone visiting or living in any of the areas above should keep alert to the weather, to wildfires, and to other natural disasters that could set in motion a wave of rocks, earth, organic matter, and mudflows.

Tips and Strategies to Stay Safe Before, During, and After a Landside or Mudflow

Tip #1: Know the area well.

Severe weather involving heavy rains, hail, and winds should signal a heightened state of alertness. Assume that high-risk land areas will produce some measure of erosion, flooding, and property damage. Prior to a dangerous situation, reach out to local authorities such as the police, fire department, and emergency medical services to learn if the area has a history of natural disasters, including landslides. The local university, a county agent, the planning commission, or the state geological survey may be able to provide some insight.

Tip #2: Plan, prepare, and practice before a natural disaster.

The key to weathering a natural disaster is to plan, prepare, and practice before a storm or flood strikes. Communicate with local authorities to learn about the area’s emergency preparedness and evacuation plans.  Formulate a family and business emergency response plan. Include several evacuation routes. Provide alternate ways to communicate besides cell phones in case family members become separated. Residents living in high-risk areas should consider leaving when severe weather is forecast or when hazardous conditions arise.

Tip #3: Stay on high alert during severe weather.

Weather radios can be lifesavers during a natural disaster. Stay tuned to accurate sources, and act accordingly on the information. Watch for sudden increases in water levels in streams and creeks. These sudden changes might indicate a mudflow upstream. If trees, fences, and telephone poles are tilting on a slope, the land may be shifting. Listen for a rumbling noise. This sound may give a family the seconds they need to seek safety on high ground out of the path of the landslide.

Tip #4: Practice extreme caution after a landscape or mudflow.

Keep a safe distance from the affected area in case more landslides or mudflows occur. If possible, attend to the needs of physical injuries and emotional trauma. Report downed powerlines, broken water lines, and ruptured gas lines to the proper authorities. Stay informed. Listen carefully to radio and TV broadcasts for emergency information, and update family members about the situation.

Tip #5: Begin the cleanup and restoration process.

In case of a storm or flood damage disaster from a landslide or mudflow in a residential or commercial setting, SERVPRO of Palo Alto is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to begin the cleanup and restoration process. A rapid response minimizes disruptions and enables life at home or at a business to return to normal as soon as possible.

Why Good Communication between Clients and the Restoration Company Is Essential

7/16/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Palo Alto highlights the value of communication as a key to customer satisfaction and a cornerstone of the property damage restoration process.

SERVPRO of Palo Alto makes every effort to facilitate communication with every customer throughout each step of the cleanup and damage restoration project. The communication process begins with the homeowner, business owner, or property manager placing a call to the property damage cleanup and restoration company.

Frantic calls in the middle of the night to half a dozen service providers can take quite a while, especially in the chaos and confusion of a fire or a natural disaster. The sooner a company is selected, the sooner a crew can respond, arrive on the scene, evaluate the damage, and begin the cleanup and restoration.

The qualification process can take more than a minute or two. Questions to ask include:

  1. Is the company available 24/7?
  2. Will there be a delay for several hours until the next business day, or will the team rapidly respond in about an hour?
  3. Is the company reputable, well-established, and locally owned and operated?
  4. Are technicians experienced, well-trained, and IICRC-certified?
  5. Will the latest equipment, cutting-edge technologies, advanced cleaning techniques, and EPA-approved products be used during the restoration?
  6. Does the company have positive reviews on social media and with the Better Business Bureau?
  7. Are references available?
  8. Will an estimate with appropriate documentation be provided?
  9. Does the company handle the insurance claims process from beginning to end?

Once the customer service agent answers these questions, the property owner must answer questions about his or her personal information, the nature of the property damage disaster, insurance information, and payment method.

The best time to qualify a property damage restoration company is prior to an emergency restoration incident. The property owner can take time to make a list of providers, research the companies on the internet, select finalists, and then communicate with each company when the home is not smoldering or submerged in flood waters. At the end of the process, a dedicated service provider has been chosen so that when disaster strikes, only one call needs to be made.

Since the company has been pre-qualified, all the necessary information for the customer is on file. The customer service representative only needs to glean information about the nature and extent of the disaster. By streamlining the process, the customer can promptly reach out to the dedicated service provider. Delays in beginning the damage cleanup and restoration add layers of complexity to the project. Advanced secondary damage increases the labor demands while reducing the number of items that can be salvaged. Replacements are much more expensive than restoration. Pre-qualification and quick communication by the homeowner save time and money.

The Importance of Internal Communication

Effective communication within the restoration company is necessary to deliver a rapid response by crews that are prepared to act when they arrive on the scene. During the qualification process mentioned earlier, SERVPRO gleans vital information from the customer. Much more than the physical address of the property, the crews have access to vital information about the home or business, such as the location of the main water valve, electrical panels, layout, entrances, and any onsite hazards that might endanger the crew or the occupants of the structure. The technicians are also made aware of the nature and extent of the disaster so they can bring the equipment, tools, cleaning products, and PPG to quickly and safely begin the cleanup. No time is wasted in unnecessary discovery and disclosure. A failure to communicate leads to costly inefficiencies and errors, but accurate communication makes for a rapid response, efficient staging, and a quicker cleanup.

Crew to Customer Communication

When technicians communicate with the customer, everyone benefits. Confusion and conflict are avoided, expectations are fulfilled, and customers are satisfied. Clear, honest communication creates a positive, trusting relationship between the restoration company and the customer.

Communication and the Claims Process

The insurance claims process can be a nightmare for the typical homeowner. The importance of the restoration company communicating with the insurance company to manage the claims process is invaluable because it removes a heavy burden from the shoulders of the property owner or property manager.

The Importance of Communicating a Positive Message about the Service Providers and the Service Provided

Positive reviews communicate social proof of a company’s professionalism, integrity, and performance. A positive review informs others of the good experience a customer had, as well as the expectations future customers can have. The typical SERVPRO franchise embraces the idea that property damage cleanup and restoration is both a service and a way to help others in a time of distress, anxiety, and personal need. Kind words of affirmation and thanks on social media are encouraging and empowering for technicians who often sacrifice to serve others when the call comes in.

A satisfied customer posted the following review of the damage restoration company: “SERVPRO came out the same day we called. What a relief! I received clear communication from Veronica every step of the way. Much appreciated.”

Dealing With Mudflow-Related Property Damage, Insurance Coverage, and Damage Restoration

5/16/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Palo Alto offers tips to help homeowners navigate the insurance concerns of property damage from mudflows.

SERVPRO of Palo Alto provides property damage restoration for homes damaged by a mudflow. It is challenging for homeowners to navigate the complexities of the insurance claims process for the water and structural damage caused by a mudflow. To help homeowners overcome these insurance challenges, SERVPRO of Palo Alto offers four tips on how to work through the insurance claims process in the aftermath of a mudflow.

Heavy rain on soil having little or no vegetation can result in a mudslide or mudflow. Homes in areas with this type of soil condition are vulnerable. Unfortunately, a standard homeowners policy generally does not cover property damage caused by mudflow, mudslides, or earthquakes. Under certain circumstances, a rider or separate policy can be purchased to cover damage from these incidents. A policy through the National Flood Insurance Program does cover mudflow. However, the mudflow must be primarily liquid. A high concentration of vegetative debris, rocks, and sediments may disqualify a claim.

Some tips on navigating insurance concerns involving property damage from mudflows.

Tip #1: Understand what a mudflow is.

According to FEMA, “An NFIP policy covers mudflow if it meets the general definition of flooding under the standard flood insurance policy. Mudflow is defined separately as ‘a river of liquid and flowing mud on the surfaces of normally dry land areas, as when earth is carried by a current of water.’”

Tip #2: Clarify the extent of the policy’s coverage.

The best way to know if a policy in force covers mudflow damage is to consult an insurance agent and request a review of the policy. Consider these questions:

  • Are there any exclusions in the policy coverage for land movement?
  • Are there requirements to protect the property against further loss?
  • How does the insurance company define “property?”
  • Does the policy cover costs for land stabilization?

Tip #3: Do not wait until the last minute to purchase insurance that covers mudflow.

NFIP flood policies cover mudflow. A thirty-day waiting period is in effect from the date of purchase.

Tip #4: Hire a professional to handle the cleanup and restoration of mudflow damage.

The safest and quickest way to clean and restore a home damaged by a mudflow is to hire a property damage restoration company with experience in mudflow remediation. A mudflow contains water, mud, rocks, and vegetative debris most likely contaminated with pathogens from the soil, raw sewage, and toxic chemicals. Safe cleanup requires personal protective gear such as boots, protective clothing, gloves, masks or respirators, and protective eyewear or face shields to keep splash out of the eyes.

Layers of mud must be removed along with water and moisture. Commercial-grade equipment is needed to quickly tackle this heavy-duty job before advanced secondary damage occurs. Cleanup of flood- and mud-damaged items must be executed swiftly if the belongings are to be salvaged. Unfortunately, fabrics contaminated with black water must be discarded.

Once the water, mud, and moisture are removed, the damage site is disinfected, sanitized, and deodorized to make it safe for humans and pets. Certified technicians utilize advanced cleaning techniques and EPA-approved cleaning products. Restoration can begin once the site cleanup is completed.

Tips to Prepare for and Recover from an Earthquake in the Palo Alto Area

3/9/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Palo Alto gives advice on preparing for earthquakes and recovering from the resulting property damage.

SERVPRO of Palo Alto is prepared to deal with the complex property damage disaster resulting from an earthquake, including fire and smoke damage, water damage, sewage spills, mold infestation, and biohazard cleanup. In a large-scale disaster such as an earthquake, the proper training, the right equipment, and experienced and certified technicians are essential for a safe, fast, and thorough property damage cleanup and restoration after an earthquake.

Palo Alto is located near major geologic faults. This close proximity to these geologic hazards puts the city and its inhabitants at risk of personal injury and extensive property damage in the event of a major earthquake. This natural disaster risk hazard highlights the importance of being prepared.

Recent earthquakes in Southern California reinforce the need for Palo Alto residents to educate themselves on how to prepare for a sudden emergency such as an earthquake that interrupts utilities and disrupts the supply chain of goods and services to the affected areas.

Palo Alto’s location near eight major faults, including the Hayward and San Andreas faults, elevates the likelihood of an earthquake disaster. An aging and stressed infrastructure will likely suffer a more severe impact from a local seismic event.

Local officials describe the situation, stating, “Palo Alto is different from some other places because we are much denser and our buildings are older.  As such, a 7.1 earthquake would be very dangerous in our area and most likely not result in zero injuries and deaths.”

A risk assessment of the city’s vulnerability identifies three serious consequences of a powerful earthquake. Critical infrastructure would be crippled. Property damage, especially fires, would be a likely consequence. First responders would be unable to get to work, let alone stage and deploy to meet essential needs. These factors further demonstrate the need for residents to be prepared for an earthquake disaster.

Tips to Prepare for an Earthquake Disaster

1. Create a Ready Plan.

A well-rounded disaster preparation and survival plan accomplish many goals. Residents who have a plan know what to do and how to react in the event of an earthquake. After the earthquake, they will have the basic supplies needed to survive if the infrastructure fails and the supply chain collapses. A solid plan can give a family or business the assurance and confidence needed to overcome the challenges presented by a major catastrophe such as an earthquake.

Components of this plan should include the following action steps:

  • Identify safe areas in each room.
  • Conduct training sessions on the “drop, cover, and hold on” method for earthquake survival.
  • Purchase and learn how to use a fire extinguisher.
  • Know how to shut off utilities such as water, electricity, and natural gas.
  • Designate a safe meeting place to gather at after the earthquake.
  • Have an online and an offline communication strategy that involves cell phones, walkie-talkies, and written notes.

2. Stay alert and informed.

Connect to the information stream by registering for AlertSCC, the emergency notification system that sends out alerts to Santa Clara County residents, businesses, and employees. Visit the city’s website for updates. Call the emergency hotline at (650)-329-2420 for pre-recorded updates.

3. Stockpile survival supplies.

These supplies include first aid items, a solar-powered emergency radio, an alternate energy source, non-perishable foodstuffs, drinking water, a water filter, medications, and hygiene products.

4. Network and volunteer.

Community will be the key to overcoming the challenges resulting from a natural disaster such as an earthquake. A wide array of volunteer organizations is available for interested residents who want to make a difference.

Tips for Recovering from an Earthquake

Preparation prior to an earthquake is necessary for safety, security, and survival. When the earthquake is over, recovery becomes a top priority. As with any disaster, large or small, cleanup and restoration are essential to recovery. Efforts to contact and qualify a reputable, competent property damage restoration company can prove futile in the chaos, confusion, and stress of an earthquake or other natural disaster.

The best course of action is to pre-qualify a property damage restoration company as a part of the Ready Plan. Listed below are some crucial points to consider.

  1. The company should be a reputable, trusted member of the business community.
  2. Technicians should have multiple certifications in areas such as water damage cleanup, fire and smoke damage cleanup, sewage cleanup, and biohazard cleanup. They should also use the best equipment, latest technology, and advanced cleaning and restoration techniques.
  3. The company needs to be able to scale to the size of the disaster. A company like SERVPRO of Palo Alto has a nationwide network of SERVPRO franchisees to call upon for assistance. An army of support can be quickly and efficiently mobilized and dispatched to the disaster area.
  4. Make sure that the restoration company can handle the insurance claims process from start to finish. A reputable company will conduct a thorough inspection of the property, assess the damage, and provide a detailed estimate documented with written notes, photos, and video.
  5. Choose a company that is available 24/7, 365 days a year, including holidays and natural disasters. A rapid response can avoid advanced secondary damage such as mold, structural damage, and contamination from gray and black water.

SERVPRO of Palo Alto is locally owned and operated, and technicians understand the benefits and complexities of living in a beautiful city in an earthquake-prone region of California.

Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, wildfires, and severe weather, result in damage to homes and businesses, creating the need for fire, smoke, and water damage restoration. These disasters also generate anxiety and stress for the people who are affected by the event.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information reports, “Home is a place which provides safety and security to the people. But, when the unavoidable situations induced by disaster damage home, properties [and] other valuable assets, it leads to a feeling of insecurity in the victims.”

A property damage disaster is disruptive and unsettling for the homeowner. SERVPRO of Palo Alto helps homeowners deal with the stress and anxiety associated with experience in many ways.

#1. Pre-qualification

SERVPRO emphasizes the importance of pre-qualifying a property damage restoration company before a disaster occurs. Pre-qualification with SERVPRO of Palo Alto means only one call is needed. It is as simple as “Hey SIRI, call SERVPRO of Palo Alto!” Vital customer information is already on file at SERVPRO and accessible to the technicians who are dispatched to the scene of the property damage disaster. #3. Availability 24/7, 365 days a year, and a rapid response

The knowledge that professional technicians are available is reassuring to the homeowner. SERVPRO promises a rapid response in about an hour, even on holidays. This quick action is a great relief to the homeowner.

#4. Trained, certified, and experienced technicians

Immediately upon arrival, a specially trained technician inspects and assesses the damage. The customer is presented with detailed estimate documentation, including photos and video. Since SERVPRO professionals utilize Xactimate, insurance industry-standard software, the accuracy of the estimate is assured. Meanwhile, other specialists are busy mitigating any water intrusion at its source, staging for water removal and extraction, providing emergency tarping, relocating furniture, or whatever else needs to be done, depending on the nature and extent of the disaster. This initial intentional, well-directed, assertive engagement by the team of professionals gives the customer the hope and assurance needed to manage the emotional stress of the moment. Competence breeds customer confidence.

#5. Locally owned and operated

The team at SERVPRO of Palo Alto lives and works in the community they serve. They care about their customers as neighbors and fellow community members. Compassion and empathy characterize every SERVPRO restoration expert. It is important for the customer to understand that the technicians embrace every aspect of the cleanup and restoration as if the homeowner were a next-door neighbor or one of their own family members.

#6. A member of a large franchise

Sometimes the customer may ask themselves, “Can SERVPRO handle a property damage disaster of this magnitude?” The answer is a resounding “Yes!” Each local franchise has a wealth of information, expertise, personnel, and equipment at its disposal, so the local SERVPRO franchise can quickly and efficiently scale to meet any type and size of the disaster. How Professional Certification Through the IICRC Demonstrates Expertise in the Damage Restoration Industry

12/14/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Palo Alto’s IICRC certifications benefit the home or business owner who needs property damage restoration services.

The team of property damage restoration experts at SERVPRO of Palo Alto has earned IICRC certifications in areas such as water damage restoration, fire damage restoration, mold remediation, and carpet and upholstery cleaning. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certifies and sets the standards for the cleaning and restoration industries. The certifications are a sign of a technician’s skill, knowledge, and expertise. Certifications also benefit the customer.

How the Customer Benefits from IICRC Certification

Atherton, CA, home and business owners needing property damage cleanup and restoration services in Palo Alto want to enlist the services of a company with competent, qualified technicians they can trust. The situation may call for applied structural drying or smoke and soot cleanup after a housefire. Training, skill, and experience are essential when the job requires safe practices, thoroughness, and rapid execution. Life and business must return to normal without delay. IICRC certification assists the client in their quest for property damage cleanup and restoration services.

Listed below are six ways IICRC certification benefits the home or business owner needing industry-leading cleanup and restoration services.

1. Provides third-party validation of knowledge base and skill set acquisition

A damage restoration company can advertise that its technicians possess industry-specific skill sets and actual experience in the field cleaning and restoring damaged properties. IICRC certification credentials document the training and successful completion of performance criteria. IICRC-certified technicians have completed rigorous training and maintain their credentials with ongoing education. Restoration specialists receive instruction in and exposure to the latest advancements in equipment, technology, and techniques. For the customer seeking to qualify a property damage restoration company, certification through IICRC validates that employees have technical knowledge and skill competencies.

2. Helps customers match services to needs 24/7

When a property damage restoration company is listed in the IICRC’s referral database, customers can match services to specific, immediate needs 24/7. Homeowners, business owners, and property managers can select a service provider with the confidence that highly trained and experienced technicians are ready to respond.

IICRC certifications communicate to the client the range of credible services offered by the restoration company. A property damage disaster often entails a complex hazard matrix. For example, a fire damage restoration may require water removal, applied structural drying, smoke and soot cleanup, sewage cleanup, mold mitigation, and deodorization.

3. Assures high standards for safe practices

The high safety standards set by IICRC impact all aspects of the cleaning and restoration process. IICRC-certified cleanup and restoration companies such as SERVPRO of Palo Alto incorporate these safety protocols into every facet of the services they provide. Customers are confident that the services they receive are performed with the utmost caution to preserve the health and life of the technicians, the occupants of the home, and their pets. Safety-conscious technicians achieve results that ensure a healthy and safe restoration, especially on hazardous sites that require special equipment and procedures.

4. Elevates credibility across industries

IICRC has nurtured strong relationships with a wide array of industries, and these alliances enable an IICRC-certified company to enjoy important access to manufacturers of carpet, fabric, furnishings, and more. Certification also allows a company to be designated as a preferred service provider for product maintenance and warranties. In some instances, failure to have carpet or other floorcoverings cleaned and maintained by a preferred service provider can forfeit a warranty or guarantee.

5. Signals integrity and customer protection

The IICRC logo sends a clear message that stands for integrity and customer protection. To maintain IICRC certification, a property damage restoration company must deliver excellent service through a responsible, honest business model. When customers see the IICRC logo, they know they are dealing with a company that is bonded, licensed, and insured and has written complaint policies in place to resolve disputes.

6. Instills lasting customer trust

IICRC certification is a testament to a company’s unwavering commitment to the highest levels of professionalism, service performance, safety protocols, and customer satisfaction. This commitment to providing excellent customer care engenders a deep trust and establishes solid working relationships that endure.

What Are the Benefits of Air Duct and HVAC Cleaning for Commercial HVAC Systems

9/21/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: In addition to commercial damage restoration services, SERVPRO of Palo Alto provides commercial HVAC cleaning for Atherton-area businesses.

SERVPRO of Palo Alto is invested in providing the commercial cleaning and damage restoration services the businesses want and need. Commercial HVAC cleaning is just such a service. Using the best equipment, the latest cleaning techniques, and EPA-approved cleaners that are safe for families and pets, the Palo Alto SERVPRO team can efficiently and affordably tackle commercial HVAC cleaning needs in the Atherton, CA area.

Ventilation systems are often a significant contributor to poor indoor air quality. A scheduled inspection of the HVAC system, along with the ductwork, can identify any issues that need attention. These issues include:

  • loose electrical connections arising from vibrations in the system
  • parts that are wearing out prematurely
  • dirty, clogged coils
  • clogged, grimy, leaking, condensate pan
  • air filters that need changing
  • dirty ductwork

How often should an HVAC inspection be scheduled?

If the HVAC system is used year-round, an inspection every six months is advised. The best time is spring and fall, after a season of intense usage. If the system sees little use for four to six months out of the year, annual inspection and servicing are adequate. In a commercial setting, where usage may be constant and extreme, the safest course is to have the system inspected every six months.

Consumer Reports suggest that an HVAC system can last ten to fifteen years. Consistent upkeep and maintenance can add years to the life of a system. Clogged coils and dirty air ducts cause a system to work harder and longer to cool or heat a home or business. This added strain reduces the lifespan of an HVAC system. Commercial HVAC systems are expensive to replace. Every added year of life is money kept in the property owner’s pocket. The ROI on a well-maintained commercial HVAC unit is worth the investment to keep the system in top operating condition.

How often should air filters be changed?

Industry recommendations are for air filters to be changed every ninety days. The EPA offers the following information which is helpful in selecting air filters for the commercial or residential HVAC system: “What is a MERV rating? Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values, or MERVs, report a filter’s ability to capture larger particles between 0.3 and 10 microns (µm). This value is helpful in comparing the performance of different filters. The rating is derived from a test method developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). The higher the MERV rating, the better the filter is at trapping specific types of particles.”

The EPA continues with an explanation of the HEPA filter: “HEPA is a type of pleated mechanical air filter. It is an acronym for ‘high-efficiency particulate air [filter]’ (as officially defined by the U.S. Dept. of Energy).  This type of air filter can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns.”

Conditions that would require a filter upgrade or more frequent filter replacement would include:

  • a personal preference to have cleaner air circulating through the facility
  • a dusty environment such as a construction site, a trucking terminal, nearby farms, or seasonal wildfires
  • pet dander from service animals
  • pollen
  • known mold issues

How often should the HVAC ductwork be inspected and cleaned?

Any inspection of the mechanical and electrical components of the HVAC system should include the ductwork, as well. Dirty air ducts contaminate the air that has been pulled through a certified HEPA filter, effectively neutralizing the effort to purify the air. Clean air ducts reduce the potential for mold growth. Cleaning the air ducts can eliminate unpleasant or offensive odors.

A thorough inspection of the ductwork can reveal leaks in the system, which allow stale, moldy, and dust-laden air to penetrate the ductwork. The circulation of this unhealthy air throughout the business, office complex, daycare, or other commercial facility compromises respiratory hygiene, negatively impacting the well-being of the occupants.

The conscientious technicians at SERVPRO of Palo Alto point out that duct cleaning is not always necessary. After the inspection, they will make recommendations that best address any indoor air quality issues, saving the business an expense while providing peace of mind concerning the health and safety of the HVAC system.

Why SERVPRO of Palo Alto Is a Safe Choice for Damage Restoration in Homes With Lead-Based Paint

8/24/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: Because lead-based paint is a health concern in older homes, it is important that homeowners hire a damage restoration company that has the certifications necessary to safely perform damage restoration in a home or facility where lead-based paint is present.

When hiring an Atherton, CA, damage restoration company, homeowners will want to make sure that the company has the proper certifications for the work that it is being hired to complete. Certification is especially important in the case of structures containing lead-based paint.

Lead-based paint puts the occupants of a home, particularly young children, at risk of lead poisoning. The CDC explains, “Lead-based paints were banned for residential use in 1978. Homes built in the U.S. before 1978 are likely to have some lead-based paint. When the paint peels and cracks, it makes lead paint chips and dust. Any surface covered with lead-based paint where the paint may wear by rubbing or friction is likely to cause lead dust including windows, doors, floors, porches, stairways, and cabinets.”

The presence of lead paint in a structure can be costly and not just in terms of health effects. In 2019, Palo Alto Online, an online resource for Palo Alto-area news, reported that ten cities and counties in California “announced a $305 million settlement with three paint companies to clean up lead paint hazards to children in older housing.”

In a damaged home, it is very likely that the lead-based paint has been disturbed, creating dust and paint chips that present a health hazard to both the home occupants and the restoration technicians. It is essential that the restoration team hired for the job has the proper certification to safely and correctly perform the damage remediation project.

SERVPRO of Palo Alto: Certified for Lead-Based Paint Activities and Renovation

At SERVPRO of Palo Alto, certifications, along with thorough training and education, are a priority. The damage restoration company has the RRP certification, which refers to the EPA’s Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule (RRP). According to the EPA, “Under this rule, contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb painted surfaces in homes and child-occupied facilities (including child care centers and schools), built before 1978, must, among other things, be certified and follow lead-safe work practices.”

The Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule “aims to protect the public from lead-based paint hazards associated with renovation, repair, and painting activities. These activities can create hazardous lead dust when surfaces with lead paint, even from many decades ago, are disturbed.”

The EPA goes on to state that the rule “establishes requirements for firms and individuals performing renovations, and affects contractors, property managers and others who disturb painted surfaces….It includes pre-renovation education requirements as well as training, firm certification and work practice requirements.”

Customer safety is of the utmost importance to the team at SERVPRO of Palo Alto. When water or fire damages a structure, the event is very stressful for the home’s occupants, and if lead-based paint is present in the house, stress and anxiety levels are multiplied. However, homeowners can have their concerns put at ease by entrusting the restoration of their home to SERVPRO of Palo Alto. The SERVPRO technicians strive to exemplify expertise and professionalism every time they respond to a client’s call.

The staff undergoes rigorous training in damage restoration techniques and engages in ongoing training, as well as regular certification from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification. These measures give homeowners confidence that they have hired a team with the knowledge and experience necessary for the safe restoration of a property.

How SERVPRO of Palo Alto Helps Property Owners After Water and Fire Damage From an Earthquake

7/5/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Palo Alto is uniquely prepared and equipped to deal with property damage from an earthquake.

California is well-known for its susceptibility to earthquakes, which can cause devastating property damage in communities located near active fault lines. In the event of an earthquake that causes water or fire damage to a home or business, property owners will want to depend on the services of a reputable, experienced damage restoration company, such as SERVPRO of Palo Alto.

Earthquake Damage in California and the Palo Alto Area

An earthquake can cause several different types of property damage to a home or business, including water and fire damage.

Water damage occurs when a seismic event damages, cracks, or dislodges pipes and water lines, allowing water to leak into the structure. If the damage is slight, the leak may not be detected until the water damage has progressed and a mold infestation has set in.

Fires are another common and potentially deadly result of earthquakes. According to California Earthquake Authority, “Earthquake fires start when electrical and gas lines are dislodged due to the earth’s shaking. Gas is set free as gas lines are broken and a spark will start a firestorm.”

Why Choose SERVPRO of Palo Alto for Property Damage After an Earthquake?

When an earthquake causes broken water pipes or a house fire, SERVPRO of Palo Alto provides a fast response to the client’s call for help. Immediate action limits further damage, reduces the scope of the damage, and lowers restoration costs. Highly trained technicians use specialized equipment and resources to handle both large and small jobs for residential and commercial clients.

Having a local base of operations means that SERVPRO of Palo Alto can quickly respond to a property damage disaster. When water is pouring out of a broken pipe, the homeowner can take confidence in knowing that the damage restoration company will arrive on the scene promptly.

Regional Experience

As members of the community, the team has experience dealing with the aftermath of earthquakes and seismic activity common to the area. SERVPRO of Palo Alto is no stranger to providing damage restoration services for homes damaged by an earthquake.

Online homebuyer resource Homefacts lists Palo Alto as having a very high risk of earthquakes. Earthquake statistics for 2020 reveal that the area was hit by 23 earthquakes that were a magnitude 3.0 or greater, as well as 198 earthquakes between magnitude 2.0 and magnitude 3.0. Furthermore, Palo Alto is in close proximity to eight major faults, including the San Andreas Fault and the Hayward Fault.

A violent earthquake is a stressful experience, and property damage only adds to the stress and anxiety that the homeowner is facing. With SERVPRO of Palo Alto by their side, homeowners can move forward and recover from the damage to their homes.

One such large-loss disaster, which led to a massive response from the SERVPRO disaster response teams, was the 2017 California wildfires. Throughout 2017, the fires destroyed or damaged more than 10,000 structures in the state (destroyed 9,470, damaged 810), a higher tally than the previous nine years combined. In total 9,133 fires burned 1,248,606 acres. In December 2017, strong Santa Ana winds triggered a new round of wildfires, including the massive Thomas Fire in Ventura County. At the time, the Thomas Fire was California’s largest modern wildfire, which has since been surpassed by the Mendocino Complex’s Ranch Fire in 2018. The December 2017 fires forced over 230,000 people to evacuate. 2017 will be remembered as a year of extremes. Why SERVPRO? A Wide Range of Residential and Commercial Cleaning Services

3/18/2021 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO offers residents of Palo Alto, Menlo Park, East Palo Alto, and Stanford professional cleaning services for both the home and office.

There are dozens of professional cleaning services to choose from in Redwood City, CA, making picking one a difficult decision. Whether residential or commercial cleaning services are needed, there are several things to consider before selecting a cleaning company.

The experts at SERVPRO of Palo Alto explain what to look out for as well as how they've built a reputation for providing the highest quality cleaning services in Northern California since 1967.

Why SERVPRO? Wide Range of Residential and Commercial Cleaning Services

More than 10 million bacteria live on the average office desk. Keyboards of home computers have over 400 times more bacteria than the average toilet seat. No matter how hard people try to keep their spaces clean, nothing compares to professional deep cleaning. Here are a few things to look for when comparing residential and commercial cleaning services:

Equipment and Technology

Make sure the cleaning service uses the latest in cleaning equipment and technology. A well-equipped cleaning team has the means to do more than a wipe down on surfaces. They should be able to clean worn-in grime, stains, odors, moisture and thoroughly sanitize a room. Companies such as SERVPRO of Palo Alto also offer sewage and biohazard clean-up.

Quality of Character

A cleaning service's employees should be professional, polite, and keep a neat and tidy appearance. Any employee who enters a home or office should carry identification and answer any questions about the tasks they are performing in a way that is easy to understand.

SERVPRO of Palo Alto only employs highly-trained technicians who take the utmost care when cleaning to maintain residential and commercial properties' integrity.

Experience

A company's reputation and experience are essential when choosing residential and commercial cleaning services. Always check how long the company has been in business and what types of services they offer.

Likewise, make sure they have experience relevant to your current service needs. SERVPRO of Palo Alto has over 50 years of experience handling cleaning jobs from the mundane up to proactive viral pathogen cleaning and biochemical spill remediation and decontamination.

Attention to Detail

A cleaning service is only as good as their attention to all the details of a project. SERVPRO of Palo Alto offers a Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned program that follows the 3 C's:

  • Consult: Taking the time to talk with residential homeowners and businesses to tailor a custom cleaning program based on their needs.
  • Clean: Deep cleaning using propriety EPA-Approved Hospital-Grade solutions, following decontamination standards set by the CDC.
  • Certify: Provide clients with a shield for their window, as well as other documentation, to represent the location's dedication to the safety of their guests, employees, and community.

Be sure to ask cleaning companies about their process, what to expect, and how long their services take. Professionals should answer these questions without hesitation and with confidence, which is hard to fake.

About SERVPRO

SERVPRO of Palo Alto offers a comprehensive range of services from carpet and upholstery cleaning to cleaning restaurant hoods and removing biohazard contaminants. They have over five decades of experience cleaning homes, office buildings, and other commercial properties in Palo Alto, Redwood city and surrounding areas.

How SERVPRO Helps You Recover After Fire Damage

1/20/2021 (Permalink)

After experiencing a fire damage event, many homeowners don't know what to do, where to begin, how to rebuild, or recuperate from such a loss. A family may be displaced for months while their homes are being completely rebuilt, or be facing partial reconstruction and major cleanup.

For homeowners in  Palo Alto, Atherton, Redwood City, Menlo Park, and North Fair Oaks, SERVPRO of Palo Alto will help you throughout the entire process.

The first thing you should do after such a loss is speak with your insurance company. Clarify your policy, and hopefully your loss will be covered. Taking pictures of your furniture, electronics, major belongings and creating lists of your valuables can literally save you when you are trying to recoup your losses and make an insurance claim of what has been damaged or burnt.

If you are one of the lucky ones where the fire didn't completely consume your home, your insurance company will suggest calling a professional fire cleanup and water restoration company.

SERVPRO of Palo Alto will work closely with you and your insurance claims representatives to clean up your home and contents, salvage what is able to be saved, and inventory what is determined to be a total loss. We will remove the heavy smoke odor from your property and belongings and coordinate dry cleaners and other relevant contractors who can help repair your home. We will treat you and your property with great care and respect throughout the process.

Our fire damage restoration services include:

  • Immediate Board-Up and Roof Tarp Service (if needed)

SERVPRO of Palo Alto responded to a major water main break in Menlo Park. This unfortunate event affected six homes on two adjacent streets near Downtown Menlo Park. Our crew worked efficiently to get the water out rapidly in order to prevent further damage. Water was extracted and pumped out. We made sure no other possible damage could occur from the standing water.
